Defining Boutique Travel

Boutique travel is a style of travel that focuses on personalized experiences, local culture and intimacy. Unlike mass tourism, it features curated experiences that are often tailored to your individual tastes and interests.

How Does Boutique Travel Differ From Luxury Travel?

Boutique travel experiences can happen on virtually any budget as it is more about quality over quantity. Where a luxury traveler may focus on opulence and high-class comforts, a boutique traveler is particular about where to splurge vs. where to save. However, boutique and luxury experiences can often overlap.

In this guide, I am going to outline the key characteristics of boutique travel and how it differs from both mainstream and luxury travel.

Boutique Travel Characteristics

Customized Experiences

When you walk into your favorite clothing boutique, you almost feel like every item in the store was made for you. A boutique travel experience is much the same - a curated experience.

Let's look at it like this...

Millions of people travel to Italy every year to enjoy sites like the Colosseum, Vatican Museums and the rolling vineyards of the Chianti region in Tuscany, A boutique traveler may still want to experience all of these things, but they would take a different approach.

Instead of going on a large group tour to the Chianti region that only hits on mass-market wineries, a boutique traveler may opt for a small-group experience that takes them through family-owned properties with a private picnic lunch in the vineyards.

Or, instead of hopping on a Big Bus Tour to explore a city like Florence, they may opt for a private food tour with a resident foodie that can guide them through all the good eats in Florence with their preferences in mind.

A boutique travel experience is about being a tourist without being "touristy". Private or small group experiences with local guides are the key to an authentic and immersive boutique travel itinerary.

Small-Scale Accommodations

Another key element of boutique travel is of course, the boutique hotel stay. Rather that large hotel chains or over-the-top resorts, travelers in this category prefer small, independently operated properties with unique characteristics.

But, beware of companies advertising themselves as "boutique". Boutique hotels are not just about design or size (you can read more about what defines a boutique hotel here).

These types of accommodations usually offer more intimate, personalized services like: live local music hours, wine tastings or private art walks of the surrounding areas. Remember, boutique travel is about curation, and where you stay should reflect that.

Authenticity and Local Culture

With boutique travel, there is an emphasis on authenticity and immersion. Instead of eating at chain restaurants or doing activities that can happen anywhere, there is a desire to learn about and participate in local culture.

This can be through local interactions (think salsa dancing lessons on a rooftop in Cartagena), unique activities, or specialized guides who can offer deeper insights into the area’s history, culture, or natural landscapes.

High-Quality Service

Similar to luxury travel, a key tenet of boutique travel is exceptional service. Examples of high-quality service include:

  • private tour guides

  • custom excursions

  • concierge-style assistance

  • personalized dining

  • chauffer service

This type of top-notch service makes for a not only an easy and hassle-free trip, but an overall more enjoyable experience.

Unique Destinations

Lastly, boutique travelers often seek out less-commercialized locations, avoiding the more typical tourist spots for a more exclusive and culturally authentic experience.

However, this doesn't mean that larger cities or popular destinations are completely off limits. It's not necessarily just about where you go, but how you explore.

This could look like tacking on an off-the-beaten path destination to a larger trip. Or maybe it's staying in parts of the city that are geared towards local residents rather than tourists.

Again, boutique travel is about authenticity. Choosing the right destination, no matter where you go is the key to having an experience that makes you feel well-traveled.

Other Types of Boutique Travel:

Eco-Tourism

A sub-group of boutique travel is eco-tourism. Imagine lush landscapes, jungle bungalows, and/or farm-stays in hidden, local communities. Travelers that seek out eco experiences may do so for sustainability, wellness or community welfare reasons.

How to Plan a Boutique Travel Experience

Because of the level of curation and detail that goes into boutique travel, it can require a bit more planning ahead of time. Here is how you can begin to plan your travel experience:

  1. Understand your desires

When planning a boutique trip, it's important to think about what YOU want to get out of your experience. Don't ask your friends for their opinions or run to the internet for advice until you can answer these questions for yourself and group:

    - What draws me to the destination or why do I want to travel?

    - What type of experience am I looking to have? (City, nature, cultural, etc)

    - What are my hobbies and interests?

    - What are my non-negotiables?

    - What is my maximum budget for this trip?

    - How much time do I have?

  2. Brainstorm destinations

Now that you have answered some key questions, you can start thinking about where you want to go if you have not already.

Use Instagram or Pinterest to find inspiration for destinations that match the vibe you laid out above.

  3. Find a hotel

Once you know where you want to go, the next best thing to do is figure out where you are going to stay. Do you prefer a small luxury hotel in the urban center or a family-run villa in a remote side of town? Or perhaps a mixture of both?

You can use tools like Expedia, Booking or Google to begin your search, but in my opinion, none of these platforms have the best filters for finding true boutique hotels.

Tablet is a platform dedicated to maintaining a curated list of the world's best boutique hotels. You can book directly on their platform or use it as a tool to find hotels. Then you can book directly through the hotel website or your travel advisor.

Tablet offers a yearly membership (for a fee) that allows you to unlock exclusive discounts and perks when booking directly on their platform.

However, you are able to bypass this fee by booking with a travel advisor. Our OOO package allows for complimentary hotel booking for the best rates, VIP perks and complimentary upgrades.

  1. Build Your Itinerary

Now it's time to start planning your itinerary! When you are starting to plan the details of your trip it's a great idea to look for inspiration from reputable sources. My favorite places to look for ideas are:

    - Inspiration: Conde Nast Traveler, Fora, and the destination's tourism website,

    - Restaurants: Michelin Guide, Eater and Trip Advisor

    - Tours & Excursions: Viator, GetYourGuide

These references will give you a great starting reference for things to do, see and explore in the area.

You can also utilize your hotel's website or concierge to find the top local recommendations for things to see and do in the area.

Pro Tip: While everyone will have their own recommendations for things to see and do, always refer back to YOUR personal desires to combat choice overload.

  1. Leave room for leisure

Don't fall for the trap that you need to see and do everything while you are planning your trip. If you love it, you can always come back.

Instead, leave time blocks or days where you don't make any serious plans at all. I like to leave time for exploring local neighborhoods, finding cute picture-taking spots or just lounging by the hotel pool with a good book.

  1. Hire an expert

Planning travel in this way can be time-consuming and overwhelming, especially if you have not done it before.

Hiring an expert is a great way to make sure get the trip you want, without the stress of planning it yourself.
