Jubilee 2025: Everything You Need to Know About Traveling to Italy

Trevi Fountain - Rome

Is 2025 still a good time to travel to Italy? You may have heard the word Jubilee floating around and it may have you second guessing your highly anticipated Euro Summer.

But what exactly is the Jubilee? How will it affect your travel plans? And is 2025 still a good time to travel to Italy? We are dishing out all the details in this post.

WHAT IS THE JUBILEE?

The Jubilee, otherwise known as the Holy Year, is a prominent event in the Catholic Church that occurs about every 25 years. It is considered a time for celebration, spiritual renewal and pilgrimage.

Many catholics will travel to Italy - specifically Rome & the Vatican - seeking a stronger connection to their faith. The event involves dedicated ceremonies and the opening of sealed "Holy Doors" in major Roman basilicas.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?

It is predicated that tourism to Italy will increase in 2025. The exact numbers - nobody really knows.

While Rome & The Vatican will see the heaviest impacts on tourism, it is projected other parts of the country may also see an uptick in tourists as a result.

This means that hotels & accommodations will experience higher occupancy rates and potentially increased pricing. Travelers may also experience longer wait times for popular sites - mainly religious ones - or altered schedules.

SHOULD YOU STILL TRAVEL TO ITALY IN 2025?

While the above information may sound like a major turn off, when clients ask us if they should travel to Italy in 2025 during the Jubilee, our answer is still a resounding, yes!

According to our destination partners, major attractions - including The Vatican Museums - will operate as normal and visitors are unlikely to experience any significant issues outside of the Christmas 2024 period and Easter 2025.

Plus, we like to remind people that Italy is more than just Rome. While everyone wants the quintessential experience of throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain (something you can still have in 2025), there are so many places to explore!

But we know, you probably still want to travel to the hotspots - I mean, who wouldn't? They're HOT. You can still do that in 2025, with some advanced planning of course. Here are our top recs for having a seamless Italian getaway in light of The Jubilee:

TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS

Plan Accordingly: If possible, avoid traveling during the key periods of the event. This will be Christmas 2024, Easter 2025 and January 2026.

We would suggest traveling during the shoulder seasons - February, March and November. And if you are dreaming of an Italian summer go for July (while keeping in mind the inevitable crowds and higher prices).

Check the Jubilee calendar and plan around (or for!) major events.

Plan Ahead: Italy welcomes the 4th most visitors of any country in the world on any given year. We always recommend planning far in advance to secure the best rates and accommodation for your travel style.

This year, it will be especially important to book hotels, tours, tickets and secure restaurant reservations for top dining experiences well in advance so that you can have the experience you want without settling for less.

Be Flexible: While you'll want to be flexible in the period in which you travel, you'll also want to be flexible with how you spend your time while in destination.

Choosing early morning tours to beat the crowds, giving yourself additional travel time and being open to different experiences will ensure that you still have a great trip without too much stress.

Book Private: When it comes to planning for visits to major sites like the Vatican Museums, consider booking a private tour.

While it's more of an investment than buying a normal self-guided ticket, you can breeze through long lines and have a more intimate experience.

A good guide will provide insider knowledge on the history and significance of important artifacts, artwork and buildings while giving you exclusive access and local tips.

Go Beyond: Italy is so much more than Rome. You can have a beautiful vacation when you visit the less traveled places like Apulia, Umbria, parts of Tuscany and Piedmont. Beautiful beaches, medieval towns and culinary treasures exist in all corners os Italy.

Hire a Pro: Planning a multi-stop, Italian holiday can be a cumbersome task any year, but this year may be especially challenging due to the Jubilee.

But maturing is realizing.. you don't have to plan your own trips.
